What’s better than a new blazer? A USED one. ••• This #beauty cost me under 10 bucks and looks like it could be worth 10 times that price 🤩 ••• Every item of clothing that you wear takes energy and resources to make - a pair of jeans👖 takes 1800 GALLONS OF #WATER! 💦 Eventually, disposing of clothing consumes #energy resources and land as well. ••• The clothing industry is one that has yet to close the gap in their manufacturing process. Some retailers doooo have programs to donate their clothes back to them (@hm), but our system needs a massive shift to make the system more #sustainable and efficient! 🌎••• TLDR; shopping #secondhand saves consumers money💰 and prevents the wasted energy and resource consumption of manufacturing and disposing of new clothing👚. Look anywhere from Goodwill to your nearest thrift/#consignment store to get started! ••• FUN FACT: I got my high school prom dress second hand for $17. Hot hot summer days aren’t that bad when you get to enjoy mangoes and papaya 🥝🍓🍌🍈 I love getting my #fruits and veggies at @haymarketboston - most of this produce would go to #waste if not sold. So I get to save 🤑money🤑 (Haymarket is CRAZY cheap) AND the #planet 🌎 Much of the produce here ends up here because it’s not symmetrical or the color is off. But I end up with beautiful and tasty produce on a budget! What’s up witch hazel!! It took me WAY too long to get on the witch hazel bandwagon, but I’m so glad I did. After days of exposure to sweat, environmental exposures, occasional makeup, and my own oil production, my skin can really use a good toner to wipe all of these impurities off. If you look closely, you can see the filth that comes off of my face (on to my reusable cotton pads from @packagefreeshop). 💚💚💚 ・・・ 💚💚💚 Witch hazel is simply a botanical plant extract that can be used to remove excess oil from the skin - I have plenty of oil on my skin year round, but especially this year, as Boston temperatures have reach a record high (and humidity doesn’t help). #globalwarming 😜 💚💚💚 ・・・ 💚💚💚 It’s also anti inflammatory and anti-aging (thanks to its antioxidant content). 💚💚💚 ・・・ 💚💚💚 Ethanol is HARSH even on the oiliest skin, and I love that @thayersnatural is alcohol-free. Most toners and astringents would leave my face feeling red and stripped of its glow (@nyleh are you still traumatized by our astringing days), so I had to share this amazing alternative that leaves my skin feeling vibrant and #fresh. 💚💚💚 ・・・ 💚💚💚 BONUS TIP: when my skin is already dry or irritated, I use this to clean off my skin BEFORE I wash it, and then moisturize. Otherwise, I use it after washing and before moisturizing. I picked mine up for $5 at @wholefoods and plan to get a few months of use out of this 💁🏽‍♀️. I have dry, coarse and wavy hair, and find that shampoo bars work well for me. I took it home in a reusable bag and will compost the paper wrapper. I love washing my hair with an option that requires no plastic bottle! See, #zerowaste can be pretty easy! ・・・ More benefits of this switch: shampoo bars are easy to travel with, can double as body soap, and have less ingredients (like sulfates, parabens, and SLS). Aaaaand to make things worse, less than 10% actually get recycled♻️. This is for 2 main reasons 1) consumers don’t toss their plastic in the recycling bin and 2) most plastic in the recycling bin doesn’t get recycled anyways. Even plastic that does get recycled, only gets recycled in to more, lower quality plastic again and again, until it is too low of a quality to be recycled and then sticks around the planet for a few thousand years, polluting our #oceans, poisoning marine life, and filling our #landfills. The process of producing and transporting so much plastic is energy intensive and causes the release of greenhouse gases too, so even a perfectly recyclable plastic product ends up harming the planet and people on it. 🌎 ・・・ Shop around for a zero waste shampoo bar that works for you! The most #sustainable option would be to find a local vendor. Make sure to avoid shampoo bars that include palm oil as an ingredient. Ten seconds before rain started pouring on my #Iftar meal ☔️ #climatechange 😜 how does #environmentalism fit into your culture? ・・・ To every meal I eat out, I pack my stainless steal tiffin, bamboo silverware, bandana, and glass water bottle🍴 This helps offset the thousands of single use utensils that are used everyday and end up in landfills or the #oceans. Eating #plasticfree makes me feel like I am contributing to making the world greener, no matter how busy I am. 🌿 ・・・ It’s also a great conversation starter about environmentalism🌎, the journey of plastic from manufacturing to waste, and my #zerowaste lifestyle. Id like to think that this small step has made gradual but broad change among my peers. 💚 ・・・ Not ready to invest in these alternatives? That’s ok!! Going green *does* cost money💰 up front, but compared to the money a consumer can save over years of avoiding single use purchases, and the vast benefits to the environment and to marine life🐳 (or birds and other land animals) exposed to waste, the upfront costs are minimal. Until you’re ready to make the investments, use whatever you can! Grab a spoon out of your drawer, a Tupperware or reused single use plastic, and whatever plastic bottles you may have lying around.
